Chilean Guitar @ St Lukes and Our Lady
Jul 23 @ 12:30 pm – 1:00 pm

Alberto Cumplido and Hilary Field

Our Lady of Guadalupe and St. Luke’s are hosting a free concert. The lyrical beauty of the music in this bilingual concert spans from Chile and Brazil to Bach, from the elegance of Baroque suites and sonatas, to the colorful and exciting rhythms of Latin American sambas, choros, and tangos. The concert features the music of Chilean composer and guitarist Alberto Cumplido and classical guitarist Hilary Field. This concert is sponsored by the Seattle Classical guitar Society. All are welcome, and the concert is free.

Alberto Cumplido

Growing up in Chile, guitarist Alberto Cumplido studied composition, musical performance, classical guitar, jazz, literature and poetry in his home country and abroad. While living in Germany, he collaborated with composers Gustavo Becerra and Olaf Jansen, creating an engaging hybrid of modern classical music and jazz. An adventurous musician, Cumplido has experimented with electronic music, and has composed for dance, film, and theater. He has also explored the intersection of music and the spoken word. Cumplido has appeared on 5 CDs, as both an interpreter of other people’s music and a composer for different chamber ensembles.

In 2000, his CD Timeless was nominated for an Altazor award. Cumplido is also director and creator of the Festival Entrecuerdas. Between 2013 and 2014 he gave concerts and master classes in Brazil, Mexico, Canada, Paraguay, Uruguay, Argentina, Peru and the USA. He has performed in international competitions in Rio de Janeiro, Montevideo, and Colima (in Mexico).

Hilary Field

International performing and recording artist, Hilary Field, has garnered praise for her dynamic virtuosity, her sensitive musicianship, and for the emotional depth she brings to the heart of classical guitar music. Hilary is a past winner of the Northwest Young Artist Series Competition and was the first guitarist to win the Ladies Musical Club Soloist Competition. She has held faculty positions as the head of the Guitar department at Seattle Pacific University and Pacific Lutheran University. She has released several award winning CDs, including her debut recording, “Music of Spain and Latin America,” which was an award winner for Classical Album of the Year by the National Association of Independent Record Distributors. Hilary was recently sponsored by the US Embassy to perform and tour in South America, and has been a featured performer in international guitar festivals such as Festival Entrecuerdas in Chile, Festival Internacional de Guitarra ICPNA in Perú, and Série Grands Concerts in Québec. Hilary has just released a CD of new solo music for guitar, including music that has been composed and dedicated to her. The Seattle Times exclaims that classical guitarist, “Hilary Field, is a dynamic player. She doesn’t just recite what can often be complex work, but imbues it with fire and grace.”

Posada con Pozole y Piñata @ St Luke's Episcopal Church
Dec 23 @ 1:30 pm – 4:30 pm

Join us this December 23 at 1:30 PM,  we will have our traditional Posada with piñata after mass. We will have Pozole. If you can, please bring something to share.

Las Posadas take place also in the liturgical time of Advent as a  time of expectant waiting and preparation for the celebration of the Nativity of Jesus at Christmas. Las Posadas has been a tradition in Mexico for 400 years. Las Posadas represents the journey of Joseph and Mary to Bethlehem. It is based on the idea that in this night time recreation of the search for shelter (posada) people can have a small experience of the hardships of that journey. This symbolic recreation begins on the evening of December 16 and ends on December 24.
